Tori Amos: Fairy or Vixen?
Tori Amos is irresistable and merciless at the same time. One of those self-willed women in popmusic who gathered a following with a completely personal musical style, like Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush did in the past. During previous concerts in our country, she showed us, sitting alone behind the grand piano, she could take on the world. Two years ago she commemorated Kurt Cobain with a breathtaking rendition of his 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Religion, sexuality, male-female relationships - Tori's songs are filled with them. Cryptical songs in which you don't know whether you're dealing with a fairy or a vixen; but both do magic. She sang herself on the charts twice by now. First with the catchy 'Cornflake Girl' (1994), and later on with 'Professional Widow' (1996). Tearing down the patriarchy within relationships, and women showing their own rights and strength, that's what it's all about, she says herself.
